Guy HALLWRIGHT was born 22/08/1919 in Wairoa. He was commissioned into the Territorial Force on 07/03/1945 and was transferred to the 2nd NZEF as a reinforcement officer for the Middle East, leaving NZ 16/03/1945. He then served with J Force in Japan from March 1946 until December 1946 when he transferred to the Territorial Force and subsequently to the Reserve of Officers in the rank of Captain. In October 1952 he re-joined the Territorial Force and served with the 2nd General Hospital and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel as officer Commanding W Company. In September 1960 he transferred to the Regular Force to undertake a tour of duty in Malaya with the 2nd Battalion NZ Regiment. On his return to NZ he was re-appointed Officer Commanding W Company, 2nd General Hospital. In March 1963 he was appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services at Army Headquarters and 5/09/1964 he was appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services at Headquarters Central Medical District in the rank of Colonel. In May 1966 he assumed the appointment of Director-General of Medical Services at Army headquarters and was promoted to Brigadier. He was appointed Honorary Physician to her Majesty on 19 October 1968 and in October 1969 he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. He was appointed Director General of Medical Services for the three Services on 02/06/1970. He was Colonel Commandant of the Royal NZ Army Medical Corps from 1975 to 1980. Outside of the military he established the Hypertension clinic at Wellington in 1955, was Visiting Physician, Cardiology and Hypertension Departments in 1958, and appointed Head of Cardiology and Hypertension departments at Wellington Hospital from 1960-1979. Medal entitlement is; War Medal 1939-45, NZ War Service Medal, NZ Operational Service Medal, NZ Service Medal 1946-49, General Service Medal with clasp “Malaya”, Efficiency Decoration, NZ Defence Service Medal and Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal. He died 04/02/2013.
